Not good if you're bad at 1st-person shooters

by  packdragon,   May 14, 2001

Pros:  creepy and suspenseful

Cons:  too dark to see anything, unimpressive graphics

The Bottom Line:  All right for fans of first-person shooters who like the Alien premise, but hard for those who are no good at it.

Overall Rating: 2/5 stars

The game is based on the premise of the movie, but does not try to re-create the movie in any way. In that respect you may be disappointed already if you were a big fan of the movies. However if you like the alien-hunting premise, then you might enjoy this game.

The graphics are very disappointing: pixellated aliens, drab coloring, and very dark environment. Granted the darkness really adds to the suspense of everything, but it also makes the game much harder since you can't really see anything until it's practically in your face. For a person like me who is quite mediocre at best at first-person shooting games (like Quake or Doom) it made the game fairly low-ranking because of its difficulty. You don't get much of an audio warning of the enemy, just the vague shadow and then the ripping sounds when it's in your face and you're frantically trying to shoot the thing off. In this respect it's very much like the movie because that's how they get you! People get picked off so easily because you don't know where the things are until you're almost dead. This might be for the good gamers who enjoy such challenges, but not for me.

There are difficulty settings, which probably controls how many aliens they throw at you. But the easy setting was still kinda hard for me. I guess my playing style (cautious and wanting to shoot things from far away, with wild shooting at something in my face) just isn't well suited for this game. I need a game I can see in order to enjoy more.

For those who get easily confused at multiple controls for multiple weapons and tools, this game is also not for you. When you're not able to see the enemy until you absolutely have to start shooting, there isn't time to switch unless you are well versed at how to do it. I'm much too uncoordinated for that, so that was another thing that worked against me.
